Bush Elementary History

Bush Elementary School was constructed in 1955 and is named in honor of W.R. Bush, Superintendent of Essexville-Hampton Public Schools from 1947 to 1961. The building was opened in the fall of 1956.

Bush began as a K-6 school with a total staff of 12 including 6 teachers, 1 principal/sixth grade teacher, a secretary, custodian, speech therapist, vocal music instructor, and cook. The school has offered a variety of educational programs over the years from a traditional approach to a non-graded approach to instruction where students were assigned to classrooms based upon age.

Student use of technology has changed as rapidly as the changing times. In 1986, students spent a good deal of time in the “language lab” where they used a variety of programs such as “Spellicopter.” Today, students have four computers in every classroom and access to a lab with 30 computers and a laser printer. However, computers are not the only form of technology available to students and staff. Staff and students make use of a wide variety of equipment such as digital cameras, data projectors, document cameras, and electronic whiteboards. Software programs such as “Accelerated Reader”, “Accelerated Math”, and “Microsoft Office” are also used.

Each of the buildings in the district has enjoyed great deal of parental support and involvement over the years. The “Bush Boosters” parent group began in the late 1960’s and supported many activities including field trips, supplies, Teacher Appreciation Day, and educational games. Today the “Bush Bunch” parent organization supports a variety of activities including Halloween parties and Valentine’s Day parties.

The tradition of the Bush Elementary School “Bobcats” continues today. Staff, parents, and community members work to ensure that the education for all students at W.R. Bush Elementary School is second to none.
