Verellen Elementary History

Viola Verellen Elementary School was built in 1959. It was the first Bay County school to use electricity as a heating source. The construction of the school was set back by a fire at the school in November of 1959.

Verellen has seen a number of physical changes over the years. Verellen Elementary school was expanded in 1966 with a 60 by 60 addition. The extra space was the equivalent of four new classrooms. In 1986 a new home was constructed for the Essexville-Hampton little League at Verellen. In 1997, major changes were made at Verellen with the passage of a bond issue. The improvements to Verellen included a new media center, multipurpose room, technology upgrades, and facility upgrades.

There have also been a number of changes in curriculum over the years. Today, students have four computers in every classroom and access to a lab with 30 computers and a laser printer. Staff and students make use of a wide variety of equipment such as digital cameras, data projectors, document cameras, and electronic whiteboards. Software programs such as “Accelerated Reader”, “Accelerated Math”, and “Microsoft Office” are also used.

Each of the buildings in the district has enjoyed great deal of parental support and involvement over the years. Verellen parents are actively involved in a wide variety of activities from family reading nights to theme days.
